oh, tom! lyrics

BY JUSTINE THOMAS

I’ve got a little problem
I’ve loved two men
One of them is Tom
The other is my husband

Shoo bop bop Shoo-bee-doo-bop-bop
Shoo bop bop Shoo-bee-doo-bop-bop

Oh oh, Tom
He woo’d me so
With pictures of fine food
And piggybacks, oh
But my husband

He’s got the cheese sticks
Sitting on the counter
With no time left to shower
Daughter on his shoulders
Tickling his son’s toes
Trust me he’s
Never been sexier

Chorus
Oh Tom
You’re making me wet
You’re making me hot
Making me love you a lot
Oh Tom
I loved
your alma mater
But you graduated
Even hotter
Oh oh Oh oh
Oh Tom
Oh oh Oh oh
Oh Tom

Shoo bop bop Shoo-bee-doo-bop-bop
Shoo bop bop Shoo-bee-doo-bop-bop

Oh oh, Tom
He flew to me
It was just like all my
Rom-com fantasies
But my husband

He’s got the date night
Down the street with a home cooked meal delight
He touched me as the waves crashed
He carried our table
To the beach that’s
Not a figure of speech

Chorus

I told my friends about a boy named Tom
He wasn’t duping me
just a little tomfoolery
He was worried I couldn’t say his name
I scream it every day
Like it’s his birthday

Cause you’re the man
I used to nudge awake
Now I’m sleeping in
While you make pancakes
Cause you’re the man
With seductive tattoos
Yeah you’re the man
Who changed diapers too
When the kids keep contorting like corkscrews
Oh Tom!

Chorus

about the song

Funny story: When I first met my husband, he told me his name was Tom. It wasn’t. It took him an entire month of us dating for him to reveal his real name, Gwithyen, which he was worried I wouldn’t be able to pronounce.

At the time, everyone I knew was extremely confused. I went from talking endless about this guy Tom to suddenly talking about Gwith. My social media posts were throwing everyone off with friends asking me what happened to Tom. My own mom had to write his name on a sticky-note just to remember his actual name. She kept it on her desk for a year. But now, every year, I get to share my Facebook memory about my date with Tom and reminisce about the “man who got away” and confuse all of my newest friends. Which, I’m not going to lie –– is extremely fun.

When I started writing this song, it was a playful joke to troll my husband. But as I continued writing it, I realized that “Oh, Tom!” was actually about something very relatable: the way we see our spouses before and after we marry them. As we age and experience new parts of life, we evolve. In marriage, this can sometimes be challenging as we see the person we love become someone else entirely. But it can also be wonderful to see the man who took you dancing and made out with you in the rain become the man who now wrestles your children through diaper changes and has massive tickle fights.

This song is dedicated to loving not just the person you fell in love with, but the person who they eventually become.
